There is NOTHING like live music.
Once my fiance was playing at a venue; nearby they were holding a Octoberfest. When the musicians left the Fest they came to this particular venue. They were from Austria, Turkey & Czech Republic.
Though there was quite a language barrier they all joined in, in song.
One patricular incident stands out in my mind, as I came late. My fiance & two others, each from different countries, started singing in their native language, 3-part harmony "Take me Home Country Road". It was absolutely awesome.!
It might take you a bit of work, but there is a band (or DJ if you choose) that can do what you need. A friend of mine recently got back from a trip to Russia; they played American music & were LOVED. You will be surprised at how music can draw people together.
Good luck.

I've been to wedding with both and they each have their own specialness. However, with the band one thing to think about is that they cant play 4-5 hours straight, they need to take breaks. So there is a possiblity that you might have some down times with no music. What would be your provisions for that? I know people that get both a DJ and a Band and I must say that that is the best scenario, its true there is nothing like a live band (if you get a good one), its awesome the feel of the live music, but you want to have certain standard music played as well. If you can afford it, I would recommend both. If you cant, I think I would go for a DJ, just to avoid any lulls in the entertainment.

I think that it is always better to have live music, but I've attended a couple of weddings lately that had a DJ and it was great. Usually bands have their own repertory and it's hard for them to change it or even for you to ask them in the middle of the reception to play something they haven't rehearsed. With a DJ you may even take your own music and ask for specific songs. Just be very careful by choosing the right DJ!

I'm more of a band girl myself....Play music that YOU and your husband want! People will dance and have a good time no matter what's on as long as the atmosphere is right. I had a band and specifically asked them to play more Motown and classic rock -which they did and my guests danced the night away even though most everyone liked country music! Most cities have entertainment agencies that represent a variety of bands and even DJ's. Start there and get them to send you some CD demos. Good lucki!

I'm italian, go with the dj - believe it's much better and you'll get a better variety of music. it'll be hard to find a band that can sing russian and italian. also, bands take a hell of a lot of breaks! one more thing, with a band you'll have to pay for all of them to eat too, a dj is only 1-2 people so its not so bad

I would recommend a combination of both. Search your local area to see if there is a Rusian band or ensemble who can perform during your reception and then have a DJ for your dance. The DJ can them play a variety of Russian and American music to keep everyone involved and dancing.

uncertain on the approx. fee for band, yet i've got self belief a DJ is extra desirable. With a band this is the same sound, same voices all night. You get a larger form of music (even take requests) once you have a DJ. i think of DJ's are decrease priced besides.

Band, for sure, if you can afford it. It depends upon where you are, what kind of bands are available. In a large city, you should have no problem - even contact the ethnic associations of both the Russians and the Italians.
Otherwise, with a dj you can do as we had to - we made and submitted tapes (pre-CDs!) of our family's ethnic music (Ukrainian and Rusyn) we wanted sprinkled through the dance, as well as the first few dances we wanted special Ukrainian songs.

DJ..If you hire a band they may not be able to play all types of music. A DJ just puts the CD in and lets it go. You can meet with a DJ prior and let him know what type of music you want played so he/she will have it for the big day.
