Well, some people started smoking due to peer pressure. In some schools, the "cool kids" are often the rebelious ones, and they smoked siply out of rebelion. In fact, with so much bad press for cigarettes, a surefire way to show defiance to social standards and ideas of proper lifestyle would be to smoke.
Many people also started smoking before all the negative aspects of smoking were exposed. Its only in the last 20-25 years that the population gained counsciousness of how dangerous smoking can be. Prior to that, some people simply assumed it was mostly harmless.
Also, those that started smoking often have a hard time quitting simply because of the altered chemestry in their pleasure reception centers which causes them to only function in the presence of nicotine. This causes a psychological addiction to smoking. The body also craves more nicotine.
Its also an habit. As an ex-smoker, I find it hard to do some thing I used to do with a cigarette in my mouth. I used to drive long distances often when I smoked, and now when I drive for more than an hour, I crave a cigarette. Smoking becomes so integrated in our lifes that we keep smoking out of habbit and not always out of need.

I used to be a smoker. When I started I was 17 and at that "rebel" stage. I was very well aware of the dangers but was very curious to know what it was like. At first I just continued to smoke because it was the "cool thing to do" ( I know now how stupid that was) Anyway, I got hooked and only just recently quit 7 years later. I've tried quitting numerous times in the past and if you aren't a smoker you have no clue how incredibly difficult it is. You start to associate certain activities or surroundings with smoking and get into a habit. People that smoke are very much aware of the dangers but will continue to smoke because it is so addicitve. Your system is so dependent on them that going an entire day without one can make someone very antsy. Cost is another issue.....I know personally and I am sure other people did the same......if I was seriously running low on money and only had ten bucks to my name...I knew I should save it for gas or something, but I would always choose the cigarettes. Someone who is broke will jump through hoops to scrounge up the money for a pack. Its a horrible addiction and I wish I never started. I've quit for almost 3 months now and can honestly say that I don't think I will go back to it. I think I have finally kicked the habit. I only hope more people can.

Its one of the strongest addictions that one could have. Its said
that one could give up heroin and coke before cigs. I used to smoke over 2 packs a day. No one could make me give them up,
finally I made the decision and I needed help and the Patch had
just been introduced to help a smoker give up the weeds.
I now have a friend who has cancer and its spread . My friend never gave up smoking cigs or pot. My heart breaks that I will lose
a very good friend way too young and too soon.
Everything has chemicals in it today and I think we are all going to
be in health trouble one way or another .

It is a physical and mental addiction. It takes 5 times of quitting cold turkey for the addiction to stop. And most of the stuff sold to help people quit still have nicotine in them, and they get addicted th them. Like people get addicted to nicorette gum, and it will still give them heart disease. I think the only way to stop this is to not start.

You got me. My mother smoked for 50 years, quit, 2 years later she died of colon cancer. If you see the agonizing battle people go through, you'd think people would give it up or never take it up. Its amazing to see people who have cancer or emphysema, carting around their oxygen & then lighting up.

Most start the addiction when they are young and not concerned about the health consequences. Then when they are old enough to know better they are already addicted.

Because people enjoy it.
Why do people drink? That can kill them also?
Why do people drive? That can kill them?
Why do people climb mountains?
I think you get my point.
