Why are vaccines that require multiple doses,not given too close together?

Well, they wouldn't be as effective in establishing immunity if given too close together, because it would be somewhat like giving only one vaccination. Subsequent doses are given to boost the initial immunity established by the first dose.

For illnesses such as tetanus, booster vaccines have to be given every 10 years because the immunological memory of the antigen wanes, and the booster vaccine helps to strengthen it back to a protective level.

because your body needs time to build a response to the previous dose.

Its to give time for the antigen to clear out from your system.
