I have a 2-year-old 1/2 golden retriever 1/2 malamute. My neighbor’s dog first charged her while my daughter was walking her on a leash and a fight broke out. I was not informed of this confrontation between the two dogs until it happened again when both dogs were loose. This time there dog needed stitches. I paid half of the vet bill and tried to file a report with animal control but I was told they don't take dog on dog reports. My neighbor informed me they would try to keep there dog locked up in there yard so this didn't happen again. There dog has never been locked up and has roamed the neighborhood at its' leisure. My dogs are locked behind a fenced yard and only occasionally by mishap get out. Now my dog faces dangerous dog charges because it happened again and this time apparently was nasty and there dog died. I am at a loss of what to do. The last two confrontations no one witnessed the fight start so I don't know who the aggressor was. Please help.

where did the death occur, in your yard? if so the other dog was the trespasser and your dog has rights to defend

if not then i'm not sure

Well I would go around and get signatures from other neighbors who have witnessed their dog roaming the neighborhood. If you don't have witnesses it is your word against their word. If you dog wants to fight other dogs or shows aggression against other animals and people then the charge will stick. You need to have a professional dog trainer visit your house and the dog needs to be taught on how to accept those things. If he is showing aggression towards people and other animals while he is in the backyard you need to chain him up or bring him into the house because that alone will make him try to get out of the yard every chance he can get. You should really talk with your neighbors because someone can probably tell you or saw the dog fight happen. If that dog was running loose and your dog got out to go after then he was the aggressor. They broke the leash law if there is one in your state but your charge is something totally different and more severe!!

This really isn't a "pets" section problem. You need to hire a lawyer.

But, I'm not quite sure why, if you knew there was a dangerous dog roaming the neighborhood, you would allow your dog to go outside unsupervised. Even in a fenced area, a fenced area that you knew she could escape from, it obviously wasn't the best idea.

Anyway, consult a lawyer for advice on handling the charges.

So did the other dog get into your yard where your dog was properly contained? If so, I wouldn't suspect that you or your dog would be at fault. But your dog should not be left in the backyard unsupervised if this is going to be a problem. It would probably also be wise to get your dog counter conditioned for aggression.

Well the best thing to do is get a good lawyer and defend yourself with the truth. Obviously they don't really put much effort into containing their dog and you do. If they put equal effort in then it would be unlikley the 2 would be loose at the same time.

well, in all honestly if I was a judge, YOU PERSONALLY did nothing wrong. Your dogs were FENCED in the privacy of your OWN BACK YARD...its not our fault the other dogs hopped the fence!....you did what u were supposed to do in my opinion.

im not a lawyer...but common sense tells me if a kid were to sneak into your CAGED and LOCKED pool and drown somehow...you had already taken the proper precautions.....get where I am going with this?

If your being attacked by a dog stand completely still. Don't even breathe. Any movement could make the dog attack you.
