if my kitchen furniture and cabinets, and floor are a light wood(light maple) can i use dark furniture in my living areas?

yes ,it sets a contrast as long as your walls are light coloured

Sure you can. If your living room and kitchen are close together and thats why your worried about the differences in the shades of the wood, then i would recommend buying a Japanese type screen in the same wood shade/stain as your living room furniture to kind of separate the two spaces. Hope this helps.

different shades of wood can work great together. Light hardwood floors with dark espresso furniture looks good . just make sure you dont mix colors from completely different families--for instance, dark mahoganey and blonde pine would clash.

I should think you could without a problem... the contrast is good, the natural wood is good regardless of color.
