It's the pleasure chemical serotonin's fault! The things we get addicted to usually give us pleasure in some way.
Everything we eat or drink is full of natural chemicals. Man has the ability to make synthetic ones. The reaction between the chemicals we ingest and our bodies own often causes a surge in serotonin levels! Or depresses it! Exercise has the body doing the work and the increase is natural. Habits that bring comfort have either a stimulant or depressant effect!
Man is hungry for pleasure by nature! Who doesn't want to feel good? It's the start of any addiction.
Unfortunately the chemical we want is often accompanied by others less beneficial. Usually with the effect that we need more of the substance or need it more frequently and others will either attack other parts of the body or reduce the bodies ability to produce it's own!
You're addicted when suddenly stopping will cause physiological changes that the body can't cope with!
Or you can't live with the craving!

The chemicals that are produced in our bodies that give us that high create the addiction. Whether it is adreneline produced during gambling or a feeling of pleasure during eating, it's what our bodies are predisposed to. Families with a history of alcoholism, gambling, drugs, etc. have to be very careful because there is something hereditary that can trigger that addiction. The best medicine is to make sure that you do all legal things in moderation and leave the illegal ones alone. This is in no way an "excuse" for people with addictions, as we should all have the common sense to say "no," but it is a medical reason for why people get weak around addictive things.

I've discussed this at great lengths with some of my fellow alcoholics, and most of us agree that we were born with this illness, and there was nothing that we could do that stopped it, there is something in our minds that makes us addicted. Don't know what it is though.

Following the psychological shift to dependence (can't do without), the brain's chemistry may start to adapt, demanding ever more of what it's grown used to and fiercely resisting the discomfort of withdrawal. The behaviour takes on a self-perpetuating life of its own.

What makes some people more susceptible is perhaps a genetic predisposition. This theory, with some evidence to support it, makes sense especially since addiction crosses social divides. However, this is still debatable.

It varies, some people are susceptible to addictions of non addictive things, other times its chemical.

Things like cocaine and cannabis are more likely to cause psychological addictions

Whereas things like Heroine, nicotine and alcohol can cause physical dependencies.

I think a lot depends on the individual.

In people who are addicted to things their brain works differently. Usually there is an unbalance in brain neurotrasmiters. A thought remains in the head longer. So they can think in one thing for a long time. Argentox2@yahoo.com

Mostly because your physical makeup becomes dependent on the substance.

You can go temporarily blind if you suddenly stop smoking cigarettes. That is because the optic nerve becomes dependent on the nicotine, for whatever reason and will in some cases, shutdown without the nicotine.

Once added, sometimes the the body just cannot do without the substance .

DON
