Assuming this is just an ordinary traffic ticket, and that you are not a minor, in California you never have to go to court unless you are contesting the ticket. You will receive a notification in the mail from the court advising you of the amount of bail you can post and forfeit. It will also tell you your traffic school options. (Contrary to what a lot of people think, in California citations do NOT include a bail or fine amount.)

If you want to know beforehand what the cost will be, go here and search by the number of the vehicle code section involved:

I also live in CA, but near Sacramento, and as far as I know, you still have to go to court to arrange payments. Is there a court date written at the bottom of your ticket? How about a phone number to the court? If so, call them and ask if you can just arrange payments over the phone so you don't get a failure to appear...those are no fun.

I live in smallville and we don't have to appear in court..just pay the fine, which will include the court cost....mail it in...or you can go to the court house and pay it......

this is a standard procedure ......people gets speeding tickets all the time going on vacation or while vacationing in other states....being able to mail the fine in simplifies the procedure...

You should only have to go to court if you are contesting the ticket. You normally can pay the fine by mail, unless you live in Smallville.
