I had a palette separator at 11 years old because my mouth was too small for all of my teeth. Then they pulled 4 teeth and I got braces. I had them on for 3 years. At 19 my wisdom teeth started coming in and my teeth shifted and now my alignment is all off. It has caused tmj and also I am constantly biting my cheeks and tongue. They recommend braces. I have a terrible receding gum line am worried about getting them now. Anyone have the same problem? Anyone over 30 have them? Thanks!

Braces can be given to anybody at any age. Yu need to have your receding gums resolved first. Go see an orthodontist and he will refer you to the correct disciplines for both your tmj and the gums. The gums will need to be sorted out before any braces and the tmj unfortunately is very difficult to treat (braces do not improve or make worse the tmj conditions). Conservative treatment of the tmj should only be done!

Braces are no big deal anymore- you can get the clear braces and they are not that noticable (I have clear braces) or you can get invisaline which are clear retainers to aline your teeth.

Keep in mind that braces may not fix your TMJ problem though. You might want to see a specialist regarding that. You could be grinding your teeth or clenching them at night- that can cause damage to your TMJ and create pain.

Lots of people have them, it's not an age thing, people get them at an early age to avoid having them when they're in their 30's but there's nothing wrong with that. Some women look attractive w/ or without them.

I don't have them, but I've heard of many people over 30 and even over 40 having them, it may be a little uncomfortable, especially in the begining, but they can help a lot to improve your looks. Good luck!!

I'm 32, and your story sounds like mine. All I can say is if I were you, I would totally do it. Why waste any more time?
