Many reasons:
Just for looks
Also for crawling bugs.. since it's an insecticide. It helps keeps ants and other destructive bugs from burrowing into the bark and damaging the tree
Another reason you see trees with their trunks painted white is because of the potential for bare trunks' sunburn. Many trees, such as citrus and walnut trees, have delicate bark that can be damaged by intense sun.
Supposedly, trunks are even protected from frost.
Most importantly.. to prevent sunburn and insects from living on it

Painting the bottom of palm trees with paint mixed with calcium makes them sterile so they dont drop their seeds.
