i have a 1960s wheel horse Automatic drive 12hp charger?

where you put the tractor in to go forward and reverse the handle fell off dont know where it go . Its not long enough to go to transmission

it attachs to the rod that comes out of the transmission

It's prolly an extension off the gear shift...prolly was a two piece unit and prolly half of it has broken off. if it's broken off that would explain why it's not long enough.
