All depends on the school itself and even the region where the art is from. For example, there are different styles of karate... shotokan, okinawan, etc.

What is his school's name? Try searching on the internet. Mine goes like this
White belt: Get one stripe for form, one for moves, one for one steps
Orange Belt: the stripe are the same as in white
Yellow: same stripes
Camoflauge: same stripes
Green: stripes are the same
Purple
Blue
Brown
Red
Recommended Black: must know all forms and one steps from previous belts
Black
The stripes are essential to receive the next belt.

Depends on the school, not just the style of martial arts. My TKD school has:
white
yellow
green
blue
red
black
And there are stripes/tips in between each. Some schools may slip in an orange blet or replace blue with purple or red with brown. So it depends on the school a lot.

When I took Taekown Do there were only:
White,
Yellow,
Green,
Blue,
Red &
Black.
No stripes!
My sensei was from Korea -- you either knew enough to advance to the next rank or you didn't!

it depends on the school, i think. I took tae kwon do when i was younger, but noticed that other tae kwon do schools had different belt orders.
