I know that oak is the best, but I'm buying a hardwood, are they very durable and strong?

This May help:
"Hardwood" is a general term,ask "which hardwood"

Oak is good,but "Hickory" is better.
Try making your own from an ax handle.
This is what I would do.

Look at it this way: Miyamoto Musashi, the legendary swordsman, refused to use swords in his dueling, instead choosing to duel with two bokken. I'm not sure if he ever lost a match, even as a kid.

In other words, they should be durable enough.

I would suggest rattan.

They are more flexible and transmit energy better.

BTW: Oak IS a hardwood.

Isn't that what a bokken is for? I thought they were strong because they are used for practice and so they have to hold up well.
