Pineapples don't grow on trees. They are a member of the bromeliad family and grow on a tree-like plant that is similar to the yucca or aloe. The leaves of the parent plant are razor sharp making it rather dangerous to harvest the pineapple. You get one pineapple per plant. The pineapple itself takes 3 - 5 years to mature after the parent plant has matured. Each plant can only produce one pineapple in its lifetime. After the pineapple is harvested the parent plant is plowed under to make room to plant seed for new pineapple plants. ...as told to me by a coworker who used to live in Hawaii and spent one summer working on a pineapple farm.
