I did a spanish exam and I got the results back: it says my final mark is APTO. Presuming you can only get a pass or fail, would it mean that I passed?

It means that you are capable and ready to start or to continue with Spanish lessons.

apto
adj. suitable, fitting; adequate; competent

Would you like to improve in Spanish and help us with English?

Yeah, you passed...congrats.

Apto means "able"

For example: "El es apto de seguir al siguiente nivel" meaning "He's able to go to the next level."

'Apto' simply means 'pass' in examination terms. It's not an abbreviation for anything else!
