anybody that has anxiety problems can answer this. when you start to feel it coming on, what are some things that helps you relax and not flip out? I am getting to the point that I won't leave the house because I don't want to go through it again.

I always carry a book around with me, as I've found that distracting myself from the anxiety lessens it.
If I'm at work and I feel anxious, I go sit out back and read my book, if I'm on a trip, I just pull over and read my book.

It's what works for me, though. One other thing that I've found helps - I started singing lessons just as a hobby, and have since found that the breathing techniques they teach you are an effective way of calming yourself down.

Well let me tell u what works for me...

I tried the book thing like that lady mentioned earlier, it didnt work because i knew that if i get anxious about something i will read a book and was not working after a while.

What i do now is if i become anxious where ever i am, i just leave the scene. It could be at work or at home. When I am in the car I sometimes, listen to little loud music, roll the windows down or then just pull over and get out of the car. Sometimes sleeping helped me to. Even crying because it made me feel better.

Goodluck.

If worse comes to worse, see a doc.

Wow...so many great answers!!! Isn't anxiety fun..the thing is you have to find what works for you as you can see everyone is focused on a particular object, or action that gets them through it. You just have to identify what works, two years suffering anxiety client.... For instance some people find reading a book to work..but not for me...when I am feeling one coming on I can not comprehend what the heck is on the page. Some people sing, ya that didn't work for me either. For me I just take some deep breaths and day dream "stupid huh" but it is putting my mind in a differant place, I repeat my daughters name in my head, she is calming to me. Not saying not one of the below listed is wrong, it is what works for them. Wheather it be counting to a hundred, singing in the opera or drawing it is what you find to relax you and distract you from anxiety. Good luck it may take a while for you to figure it out but there are some pretty good suggestions out there. Best of luck to you!

There really is no sense in you going through this when there are meds out there to help with these things without making you loopy. Not all meds make you zombie-like. I am currently on Lexapro which is a low dose anti-anxiety med. It works and I have no side effects from it. Don't be embarrased to go see a doctor. Docotors see this all the time, that's what they are there for. Take care of yourself, don't be ashamed of that. ~Good luck~

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.

Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life

through my experience when you get these feelings you must carry on with what you were doing at the time, if you just sit and think about what to do about the feelings for me they just got worse. Its really hard but you must go out of the house even if you are feeling anxious as the more you worry about going out incase something happens the worse you will get,it does get easier after time but it is really hard. All the best.xx

i know that deep breathing helps calm the body and mind.
i used the yogic method.
breathe out slowly. take your hand, place your thumb on one nostril, the 2 next fingers on your forehead between your eyes, and your ring finger on your other nostril. close off one nostril, breathe in to the count of four, slowly. hold your breathe for 4 counts, exhale through the other nostril. hold for 4 counts, inhale through that same nostril, hold, exhale from the other one. do that for a few minutes.
there are many more things you can do, if you want, email me..
good luck
