Hello Smoovkey. My question is.....does he suffer from depression or he is just sad?....Anyways it is so important to listen to him, be always there in the good times and the bad. If he is depressed, it will be useful for him to go to a psychiatrist who can diagnose and treat depression. Argentox2@yahoo.com

The first thing I would do is learn about depression. You may have a better idea if the problem is from a specific thing, a chemical imbalance or both. Next never tell the friend to cheer up. The last thing we want to hear is something along this line. After all if we could we would. Once you have researched all of the symptoms you might be more aware if your friend has suicidal tendencies or just needs someone to talk to. Sometimes the best thing to do is to ask what your friend wants. For example: do you want me to stay or go?
You can then suggest watching a good comedy. If your friend can't concentrate on anything it will still be easier for you to pass the time.
An excellent idea is suggest going for a walk. Ask your friend if they want to talk or just walk?
After the visit you will have felt that you tried and your friend hopefully won't hesitate to call if he or she feels they cannot cope anymore.

Suggest that they get professional help. You cannot do anything about their depression. They need to see a doctor. If they refuse, then distance yourself from them. It's attention seeking behavior if they won't get help and believe me....people like that will suck the life out of you.

Be there for them, let them know that if they need to talk, You'll be there to listen. If it's really bad, try to help them to go to a Dr. Not every one who is depressed wants to go to a Dr however, scared to admit they have a problem. So try to help them to go if you see them in really bad shape.
But, I really think the best thing you can do to start off, is to listen to them, let them talk to you. You don't necessarily need to give advice, unless they ask for it, just listen. Sometimes it helps to just have someone to talk to.
