Let's start why he wasn't "put down " right away. It's called "Stud Fees" Contrary to popular opinion on this board, this wasn't a matter of being humane, it was a matter of being human and greedy. That's a very big difference, humane, or human, think about it people!
KMN you have such a lovely look on life through rose colored glasses. If Barbaro survived, and in my opinion he should have been put down right away, his worth was stud fees of 150,000+ per mare. Have you any idea how many offspring and the profits in it? That's the sad truth of a horse, dog or any animal when humans are involved.
Yes it was terrible watching him jump the gate, then Edgar pulling him up lame, but he should have been but out of his misery then. Never should an animal, or human be kept alive simply for profit, and that is what his greedy owners did. Oh let's not forget he was insured for 12 million, and donations, in the end paid the bill for all of Barbaro's pain.

It was heartbreaking, but I think if it hadn't happened, Barbaro would have lived the rest of his life in intense pain. He would find it painful to stand, let alone walk and trot. And that is no life for a horse, espcially such a young one that should get to run.

I am so sick of some of you people that are saying that people being sad about barbaro's death are being stupid and that Barbaro should be dogfood, as well as saying, 'well, whatever, its just a horse'. This is mainly directed at Gaylover and You. Go get a job, you losers.

Yes he was young and yes he was a great champion, but he was in a great amount of pain and being in a sling is no life for a race horse. The best thing at this point is for everyone to get over it, he is gone and there is absolutely nothing anyone can do to change that.

I think it was the best choice. He did not deserve to suffer. I would do the same thing for my horse, if he was in that position, but I would sell my soul trying to save him. He means the world to me. I am an adult show competitor and put my horse high in my priorities in life.

I am not trying to be rude, but to all of you people who have negative things to say about the person asking this question...why look? Most of you probably do not have horses, otherwise you would not make such uneducated comments. ALSO TO THE GIRL WHO SAID "TRUE CHAMPIONS ARE NOT MADE BY BREAKING DOWN...." . HONEY, GET A CLUE. WHEN A HORSE WINS THE KENTUCKY DERBY, THEY ARE CALLED A CHAMPION. It is the Super Bowl of horse racing. If we call football teams who win one big game world champions (which that is what the official title is), a horse who wins the biggest race, is a champion. It doesn't take a Harvard education to figure that one out.

It's both a good and bad thing. The reason it's both is because Barbaro was such a wonderful racer and such a beauty and he could have done such amazing things and it sucks to see him get put down because he was such a cutie! But we got to look at the bright side, he's in a wonderful place now doing what he does best. Now would we rather have that? Or have him down here doing surgry that's not even really helping? You decide...

R.I.P. Barbaro....♥

When an animal is in that kind of pain, and we know we can't do anything more for them, it's better to put the animal down than to make them suffer. In Barbaro's case especially, I'm pretty sure they would have done anything possible to keep him alive if they could have. I think they did the humane thing.

Yep, a true champion, but there was no way to stop the laminitis that had been creeping up in three of his legs, I think the 12 sessions of anesthesia didn't help either, 12, many humans couldn't even go through that. Goodbye my strong champion!

I think this question is so over asked. Putting the horse down on the track would have been the right thing to do. But nnnnnoooooooo the media had to blow this horse way out of proportion. Any other animal would have died that day. This is the same answer I have given a million times, and if people keep asking this question I will again.

This is going to sound harsh but to me, true champions are champions because they did not break down. (With exception of Ruffian. Who died in the lead.) We throw the word around too much.

Edit -

demongelding1 with out looking it up name 30 horses who have won the derby, Barbaro is a media champion. Don't call me uneducated I've been in the racing world a long time.

He was put down because he had gotten laminitis in both his front feet. Three bones in his right hind leg was shattered and the left had laminitis. Dr. Dean Richardson had said it left him 'without a good leg to stand on.' You may think htye let him die but he was in alot of pain. They said by looking at his eyes you could tell. BPutting him down was the best thing that they could do for him. Can you imagine him in a sling for months while waiting for all four of his legs to heal? Thats no life for a horse. They did what was best for him in my opinion

It was a horse. It was given a better chance to survive than any other horse and it still couldn't, so why not just let it go. Letting it suffer definitely isn't worth it.
