Weird isn't it? I live in a community that used to be all orchards, so we seem to have a half and half population of Mexicans and Whites. The schools are starting to teach in both languages so all the kids can be bi-lingual by middle school. One of my neices fell way behind because of this program though. She didn't know Spanish to start, so she couldn't learn in the classes that were taught in Spanish. Her school does assemblies in both languages, taking twice the time to get through. Ick. Where is the education when everything has to take twice as long?
I think that it is good to be bi-lingual, most other major countries in the world speak at least 2 languages, more in the small European area. But, I think that everyone should learn the language of the country they are in ASAP. I don't think we should coddle people and enable them to not have to learn. There is a grace period, for which we have had ESL classes in our schools here to help those students learn so they can function in this country. I don't think we should allow them to never learn English.

i'm just as for immigrants learning english as "the next guy" but i think bilingual education is necessary in some school systems. This is so that a child doesn't fall behind in other subjects just because they don't understand english well (like math and social studies) and these programs also teach ESL.
Like it or not, we're a melting pot here. Signs in two separate languages only facilitates consumers who speak very little or no english. If you don't want to put up two signs, don't, but depending on the area you live, you may be losing some customers.

The focus is on keeping the American language English.
It will take time. The Spanish- English speaking children
of today, will be the English- Spanish speaking adults
of tomorrow.
Live here, speak the language.

First of all, people in other countries learn different languages all the time. Many countries make learning English mandatory in schools- countries that don't even have ANY significant English speaking population. In America, we're so used to everyone around us speaking English, that we forget that there are other countries where people speak other languages.

I don't know what "the secret agenda" would be. I think we've diluted our nation to the point of ridiculous with all the fluffing we do to assure no one gets their feelings hurt; why don't all members of this nation from the millions of backgrounds/history, just get after living each day to the fullest and quit dinking around with all this stupidity! Do we really think so little of people that we feel we have to dumb down and draw diagrams on how to do everything? Here it is: live, give it all when you do and love others as you should love yourself.....the end.

It's all about "globalization" and trying to be this "melting pot" that America is. I personally think globalization is a joke and we shouldn't have to conform to everyone else's cultures to satisfy others. If you were to move to Germany or China or Japan, do you think they would be bothered to accept your language so quickly? Wouldn't you first try to make an effort to learn theirs? That is how other countries do so much better economically than America is doing right now. They keep their own culture, society and business local and try not to let anyone else from some other country dictate how to run their lives.

No!! THe government says it is the christians!! Homeland Security is having to put more and more time and resources into tracking christians who seek to tear up the constitution, destroy democracy and foment a second civil war to install a christian dictatorship!! A chilling warning was issued to US police forces about the threat of a rise in violent right wing and christian extremist groups fueled by recession and hostility over the election of the first black president!! Seems these people are not just a bigger threat to American freedoms than external terrorists but completely anti American!!! Feel free to emigrate any time soon!!!

This Yahoo person thinks the only reason there are so many hispanics in America is because most of them are ILLEGAL! The way I look at it is, if you want to come to my country so bad, at least learn the language first, especially if your presence here is against the law!

I'm glad of your bringing this out. Indeed. Not to mention the disservice it does to the many, the preconceived notions that will undoubtedly arise, and the fact that without a doubt there is an ulterior motive. So long as there are bad guys in the world, they will subject others to being used. To their own ends.
