i was looking up a list of carcinogenic substances on the internet and petroleum was one of them...

don't think so..
i think the raw unrefined petroleum may be the culprit..

While petroleum in its crude stage may be carcinogenic, the small amount of the substance in Vaseline, which is petroleum jelly, is so slight, that I seriously doubt it would be considered a harmful substance. Vaseline is even used on tiny babies for diaper rash. It's also possible that the name "petroleum jelly" is a misnomer, and that there may not be any in Vaseline. Check with your doctor. I'm sure he or she will tell you that Vaseline won't give you cancer. I've been using it for years for everything from burns to cure chapped lips. It is just a harmless lubricant.
