It is not recommended to put cereal in a baby's bottle or spoon feed them solids before 6 months of age. Babies should have only breastmilk or formula before this. In the early months, your baby will be able to suck and swallow liquids but cannot safely swallow solids especially if it is in a bottle. It poses a choking hazard and it is a myth that it fills them up so they will sleep at night. It can also introduce unnecessary allergies to an immature stomach. They did that in the old days. Ask any goood doctor and they will say NO. Babys should be eating cereal with a spoon. They need to learn about the texture and at 6 months, it should be watery. You gradually thicken it as they get older. These are some signs your baby is ready for solids: He has good control of his head. He is able to sit upright in a highchair or infant chair. His mouth opens wide when it is offered. Old fashioned techniques are not always better. Listen to your doctor.

The 'old fashioned way' is ALWAYS the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Many newborns are just not satisfied with milk - they need more.
The best thing to do is give him a tiny bit of rice cereal with no flavors (it's the easiest on their system - you shouldn't use any 'flavored' ones because the fruit has acid in it and that could do some damage). I did this with my children and that tiny bit seemed to help them sleep longer than 2 hours between feedings.
I just hate to read some of the questions, from new mothers who only listen to the doctor. For some reason, the doctors don't want a baby on any foods until they are almost 6 months old (they only want them on milk) - and that's TOTALLY WRONG!!!!!

I definitely believe that "Mothers Know Best" when it comes to their children. I think that a small amount of cereal mixed with formula would be fine for the baby. I began cereal feeding my son at 3 weeks. He is a perfectly healthy 14 year old, and NO, he is not obese. I don't think that I would start the apple sauce yet, but ease him into the cereal feeding. Good luck and congratulations!!!!!

When you get a good answer please let me know. I am going through the same thing. My son is 15 wks but this entire time he doesn't seep satisfied with just milk, I tried to give him ceral in a bottle but he doesn't know how to swollow yet.. Umm if I were you I would wait. As soon as he turns 4months than I am going to give him food. My son wakes up every 3 hours at night to get fed, it is annoying but it is the safe way to go..

When your mom did it with you, there wasn't nearly as much known about babies' digestive tracts as there is now. We now know that it is best to wait until 4-6 (and preferably 6) months because solid foods can be very hard on an infant's digestive tract and sets them up for food allergies.

Can't see that it will do him any harm.....if he is not satisfied with just formula than maybe half a spoonful of baby food can't hurt.
