Are you actualy going to use the 4x4? I ask because it will cost alot more to insure a 4x4 than to insure a 2 wheel drive vehicle.
I have a friend that bought a 4x4 years ago...never used the 4wheel drive once. But pays for it every month in higher insurance bills............makes no sense to me.

I'd say go for the newer truck, but if the newer truck is in better shape than the older one, buy it! Parts for older vehicles are harder to get than newer ones. Get a four cylinder engine if possible. They give better gas mileage than a hulking v/8, and standard shift, for the same reason. I bought a 91 Ford Ranger 4 cylinder, 5 speed tranny, for $500! Got it 4 years ago. It has 186,000+ miles on it, and i use it every day, for my lawn mower business! Easy on gas, runs good, i take it everywhere! And, it isn't a slouch on the hiway! Runs rings around some cars out there!
