The FJ is a great vehicle, but the back seat is tight. Your kids might be small now, but in a few years, they won't be able to fit in the back. It's really your call and depends on how long you plan on keeping the vehicle. The Honda Element is also a very good vehicle too, but it is very underpowered. Whichever one you choose, you can't go wrong. Honda and Toyota are one of the best vehicles out there as far as reliability, quality, and money value.

I have been driving the FJ Cruiser from St. Pete Florida. Right now, we are in Panama and have shipped the car to Venezuela to continue on to Brazil and the rest of South America.
The FJ cruiser in my opinion has a problem with visibility due to the size of the spare, one has to get used to using the huge rear view mirrors. The car handles very well and did well in some rough roads across Central America.
One major problem, it is not very economic. The five speed automatic, four wheel drive gives you no more than 19-20 miles per gallon

I'm having a problem myself deciding between the Honda Element and the Toyota FJ. I'm leaning towards the Element because there is SO much room in the back seat, but I don't like the fact that the sunroof is in the rear of the car. I don't know - I hope you can decide because I don't know which one I like more!

If you are looking for a capable off road vehicle as well as a family hauler, unfortunately both the vehicles you are looking at fall short. The FJ is quite possible one of the best off road vehicles on the market, but having a family of my own, I would not want to try and situate a child seat in the rear seat. The rear seat is small and claustrophobic. The Element, aside from its quirky appearance, is a good sized hauler, but not made to go off road. I would look at a 4Runner, Jeep or Explorer.

Consider this: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2006/10/toyota_quality.html
Toyota is also the king of recalls, with the most in '06. Seriously consider the H3, it is much more practical and refined than the FJ, and is about the same size and gets the same gas mileage. If you can afford it the new Chevy Tahoe is just awesome, its so nice, especially the interior.

just so ya know... the back doors open like suicide doors...the windows are fixed and dont roll down.
I looed at them too when i was 4x4 shopping, but i also have a child...it would be a pain in the butt getting the kids in and out of the fj.
neat vehicle, jsut not really as family friendly as i had hoped.
the 4runner is a better deal for a family. even the new 4 door jeep wrangler with a hardtop is more family friendly.

fj is a great off-road vehicle, but a really bad family car. just like sunidaze, and nascar24, i'd opt for an H3 which is a bonafide mall cruiser/soccer mom SUV. i am sure the H3's inline 5 engine will suffice for highway driving/mall crawling. just make sure you plan ahead of time when passing other vehicle. happy motoring!!

I would rather get the Honda Element over the Toyota FJCruiser cause they're much more fuel efficent.
