If you received a 1099, it was because you are not an employee of that company and could be considered self-employed. Per the IRS, if you are self-employed and earned more than $400.00, you should file.

No, if you received a 1099 then the IRS also received that same information. Speaking from experience, I forgot that I did some consultation work and file my taxes before this information came and behold, now I owe them. Go ahead and file your taxes regardless of whether you received anything or not.

No. When companies send out 1099, they send a copy of that to the IRS along with 1096 (which summarizes all the 1099's they sent out). The IRS would have a copy of your 1099 waiting for your tax return to match up.

It depends on what the 1099 was for. If it was for work, for self-employed income or work as an independent contractor, then you must file if it was over $400. If it was, for example, for interest, or for almost anything other than work that you did, then the limit would be much higher.

just file the return. we know you received a 1099 for $10,000. the IRS has a record of this. you need to file it b/c you will owe self-employment tax on this income.
