At the end of Arthur's life, Arthur would return Excalibur to the Lady of the Lake. The Lady of the Lake was eventually obliged to reclaim her sword when Arthur was fatally wounded at the Battle of Camlann and Excalibur was hurled back to misty waters.

After King Arthur is mortally wounded he tells Sir Bedivere to throw is sword into the water. Bedivere pretends to do so but Arthur knows he's lying and asks him, again, to thrown the sword in the lake, Bedivere again pretends to do so and Arthur, again, tells him to throw the sword in the lake. The third time, Bedivere does throw the sword and before in reaches the water a hand reaches up from the water and grabs it then pulls it under water. That's what happens to the sword in the legend of Kind Arthur.

It never truly existed... it is a mythical sword. King Arthur, debatabley existed, but not everything occured in his stories/fables. There are exaggerations, he probably had a sword that was really nice looking, but it was never stuck in a stone that only he could pull out nor did the lady of the lake give it to him
