your friend is so wrong.. if plod catches you, and theres a good change with the new PNR systems fitted to EVERY persuit-traffic car, you'll lose teh car... regardless of insurance and MOT, then yo get to pay a whopping fine to get it back, after youve paid for your tax, and paid the fines imposed for having a vehicle on the road sans TAX...
is it worth it? well only you can make that judgement... and you can pay for your tax by installments, goto the DVLA website for details.

it depends where you live if in the UK if stopped by the police it can be impounded and crushed currently the Hampshire police are doing this and they are catching over a 1000 people a week and taking there cars the dvla do give you 14 days from when the car is due to be taxed to get it taxed ,the police are a different matter they don't tend to be so lenient,if your stopped in certain parts of the UK who don't confiscate your veichle then your issued with a fixed penalty fined basically.its not worth taking the risk the police have built in scanners in the BMW and Volvo patrol cars and can check all your details with the dvla at a click of a finger i would be worried every time i saw a police car if i had no tax but if your asking this question i think you already know the answer don't do it

Keep it on the drive - until you get tax and get it SORN'ed (free) cause if you don't tax or SORN it you will have a letter through the post from DVLA because it's all on computer now, with a £40 fine, if you don't pay by a certain date then it goes up to £80.
I usually put £10 a month away for tax and when the tax is due I have the money ready instead of paying out a lump sum in one go.

Answering your question, you could lose the car.
Your m8 is wrong, keep it off the road until you have the full set of tax, insurance & MoT. That includes not leaving it parked at the roadside - tax is still required.

no its not if you don't have road tax or if you did not have a mot your insurance is nil and void so if you hit some one or something you will have to pay out your own pocket and you will get 6 points and a big fine so its up to you to take the risk

unless your car is taxed then your car is not legal to go on the road . This means that your insurance is void so park up and save your self a lot of possible grief

do the right thing and leave it on the drive. It is hard when you can't afford stuff like this but imagine getting back to your car and it has been towed away. Can you borrow money from your parents or friends?

As Emma B has said: No tax = invalid insurance.
Also, if you get caught by the automatic number plate recognition vans or by the Police you could face your car being crushed.
If you can't afford to drive it, declare it off road (SORN).

Do the right thing and tax your car.
The police have a new system where it tells them everything (if you have tax, mot and insurance)
IT DOESN'T WORTH IT
