I'm trying to put a link on the left side, a link for my favotrites, sign in, and sign out.

ctrl + alt + del is the task manager not the task bar
the taskbar is the bar on the bottom of the screec with the start button on it
to add the Quicklaunch on the left side right click the bar go to the toolbars on the top of the list and check the appropriate toolbars

Anything you want to make a shortcut to on the taskbar just send a shortcut to the desktop and drag it from the desktop down to the taskbar. You can then just delete the icon from the desktop once you have moved it.
