"Protestant" strictly speaking refers to the Christian denominations that split off from the Catholic church beginning with the Lutherans in 1517; protesting various aspects of Church practice and policy at the time. Nowadays, its a collective term--referring to any non-catholic but nevertheless Christian church.

Evangelical refers to the obligation to "spread the Gospel." All christian denominations share this doctrine--but some focus on it more than others. The churches (and sometimes particular groups within a denomination) we think of as evangelical try to make the task of "winning others to Christ" a center not only of the Church but an important part of the individual's life.

Practices vary, but commonly, an evangelical church will include an "invitation" in every service, have a strong visiting and outreach program, and many members will participate actively in this ministry (or, if you're a bit cynical, perpetual recruiting drive). They also tend to support missionary work and organizations that also engage in such outreach. Usuallly (but not always) the teach the doctrine of "salvation by faith, not of works;" meaning that salvation can only come by accepting Christ as saviour, not by any amount of good works performed in the absence of such submission to God.

In today's society, one does have to be careful-many of the "evangelical" churches have become little more than right-wing political organizations--and are not following the teachings of Christ. But there are still many out there that do--and they have a long and rich history of public service and activism which has, unfortunately, been sullied by the behavior of the extremists in the last few decades.

A protestant is any denomination that descends from Lutheranism. Martin Luther was the first "protestor," against the Catholic chruch and his followers are called Protestants. It's commonly thought that the main three sects of Christianity are: Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant

Evangelicals are churches or people that believe in Evangilizing. Most often Evagelicals are Protestants.

here's a little exert from wikipedia that might help explain it;

The evangelical movement in Protestant Christianity encompasses denominations and parachurch organizations such as the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association which, among other characteristics, focus on evangelism and the drawing-in of new converts. In common parlance, the title of evangelist is most easily associated with those who lead large meetings like those of Billy Graham, possibly in tents or existing church buildings, or those who address the public in street corner preaching, which targets listeners who happen to pass nearby on the street. It can also be done in small groups or even on a one-to-one basis. Increasingly, the Web enables anyone to become an Internet evangelist.

The term is also used in a non-religious sense to describe an individual who takes up a cause and convinces others to it. Guy Kawasaki, an author and venture capitalist, describes evangelists as individuals who promote a particular product. At Apple Computer, he was part of a team of Apple evangelists that convinced programmers to develop software on the Macintosh Platform. In The Human Fabric (Aviri, 2004), Bijoy Goswami describes the "Evangelist" as one of three core energies in people and society.

protestant christians are nuts but they aren't so mentally insane that they freak out and spout gibberish and tell everyone its tonques and that god has taken them over whereas evangelical christians do. Its like the local mental hospital some people are allowed to walk around while others they keep up on the 12th floor.

Protestants are non-roman catholic christians - by strict defintion.

Evangelicals are christians who are trying to tell others about Jesus, fulfilling the "great commission" in Matthew.

You can have Roman Catholic Evangelicals, but you could not have Protestant Roman Catholics.

Protestants actually protested against the established church in Europe. Evangelicals supposedly believe in the Bible, not the church.
