I have a cockatiel that talks a bit. He says "hello" and "pretty bird" and he whistles some songs, but I don't know what else to teach him. I'm just wondering if your cockatiel talks, and if he does....what does he say?

Words with "hard" sounds in them are easiest for birds to pronounce... so "k", "t", "d", are good letters to utilize. Cockatiels are also amazing whistlers. Mine does talk, but prefers to whistle everything. Her name is Beaker, and she loves whistling her name... we playfully call her "Beak-a-Beak", and she whistles this as well. She learned the X-Files theme song a few weeks ago and loves whistling that. She also does the Woody Woodpecker whistle. She also imitates us laughing, and whenever there's a comedian on tv she "laughs" right along with it. She barks like a dog after listening to our lab. She also imitates us coughing- whenever I cough, she does, and she's starting to "sneeze" too (an unfortunate result of the whole house being sick lately!) She also imitates the phone ringer and the sound of the keys on the keypad.

Birds really are amazing in what they learn to pick up. Once they learn a few things, they're on a roll... it's hard to get them to be quiet, but I love listening to their noises! Good luck training your cockatiel!

Only males talk as a general rule, so the poerson who;s birds only chirp you have females .

Mine are cheeky. One,"Squeek" calls out Hey, can't you see im a pretty cockatiel? Sqeeks a pretty boy!

Booboo calls out to visitors hey you go round the back .

A younger male says check the water, check the water. Got that from my son when he was in charge of the sprinkler system for the birds

I love all kinds of cockatiels. I own the normal grey ones, albino ones and pied one and some pied yellow split ones. They are all lovely in their own way. I own 12 cockatiels and have right now 10 eggs and 3 babies.

Mine don't talk but whistles the andy griffith song. My sisters talks a little and he says pretty peppy and pretty bird. You could teach him good bird or good boy or even your name. I have a parrotlet that learned a easy phrase. I would tell him Say pretty Tiki and he says the whole thing and adds a few prettys to it. LOL Just keep saying easy words and he will pick them up. Have fun and good luck.

You may want to invest in a bird CD there are several that either whistles or teaches phrases perhaps, since you have been successful on your own - just view the phrases and train your bird - on the one's you would like to hear!

Good Luck!

The males sing. Their 'talk' is really just mimicing the sounds. Mine does Zippity do dah, shave & a haircut 2 bits, wolf whistle, prettyboy, hi kuku(his name). Get some cute sayings.

Mine never talked. I would consider myself lucky if she had. But she was kind of dumb. I have heard that you can teach them songs, and a few of them will learn to talk. But it's not that common. So congrats to you!
As far as teaching other things. Keep it simple. Maybe teach him "good-bye" and "dinner time" or something like that...but keep it easy.
