No, but, there are some downsides that you have to be aware of.
Because steroids for athletes are generally illegal most of the info out there on how to cycle and how to use them is really bad.
Then there are problems with your growth cycles if you start on steroids before your body finishes growing. They can stunt growth or cause your bones to grow together when used improperly.
I never used them because I got into body building after I quit using drugs. Friends did and they had different results, hair loss, low sperm count, huge biceps. Properly used you can minimize the downside and maximize the upside.
One guy I know had 'roid rage on the job and ended up being convicted of assault (not battery) because he frightened people.
The biggest downsides are using too young or using improperly, both easy to do without medical supervision. I suggest you do not use them unless you are majoring in phys-ed in college and are past any growth, generally mid twenties. That way you are better informed and you won't screw yourself up.
There are also some really good websites where you can get info on works. Just be really careful because there is a lot of garbage propaganda out there on both sides of the fence.

Not everyone really knows what anabolic steroids really are.
Anabolic androgenic steroids are a class of natural and synthetic steroid hormones that promote cell growth and division, resulting in growth of several types of tissues, especially muscle and bone (taken as is from source URL).
Just this sentence by itself, without going into any details, should let you already know what can happen if you experience either a decrease or an increase in your hormone levels.
It's serious stuff. Here are some of the consequences of abusing steroids: heart disease, cancer, infertility and acne.
Of course, it all depends on how long and exactly what you are taking. Don't be fooled by the fact that you don't see any negative symptoms in your friends now. They very well may show up years from now, or not. It's a chance that they take.

The long term side affects of steroid use make taking them extremely pointless.
Taking steroids can actually shut down your bodies ability to produce testosterone. This means that once you stop taking them, you will lose most of your muscle mass, not to mention have many other problems in the sexual department.
Don't touch roids!

Yes, avoid them at all costs. Steroids will essentially destroy your brain and body. There is a ton of research on this, unfortunately the people on them only have the short term, me first, and gimme gimme type attitudes. Too bad most of them are lured away from logic without the mental toughness to resist.

If they are not prescribed definately not.
They have numerous side effects including tissue paper like skin, heart problems, elevated blood sugars, steroid induced diabetes, stomach and duodenal ulcers, heart problems, susceptibility to viral, bacterial and fungal infections........... the list goes on.
Withdrawal symptoms are also huge.
When patients have steroids, they also have to take numerous medications to counteract the side effects.
There are over 100 different side effects of taking steroids, and thats for the people that are monitored medically. I think if you still want to take them for vanity - more fool you.

it depends on how you take it what you are taking it for and what type.
They are used in medicine commonly as anti-inflamatories.
They do however have lnotorious long term side effects including
Posterior subcapsular cataract (cataract)
High intraocular pressure (high eye pressure which can lead to glaucoma)
Ptosis (droopy eye lid)
Reduced ability to heal from infection as it acts also as an immunosuppressant.
There are more side effects but eye have stated those more specific to the eye.
The side effects are more prone when the steroids are taken for systemic administration as opposed to local application such as cream or eye drops

Nothing is BAD in moderation, then anything can be HARMFUL in excessive dosage...For men steroids can cause — shrinking of the testicles, reduced sperm count, infertility, baldness, development of breasts, increased risk for prostate cancer. So you do the math its a big compromise.
