Both are equally effective if a good strong rope is applied in both cases. The up side is the perpetrator will never be able to reperpetrate the act again and that's my ruling.

Depends on the circumstances of the crime AND on the person. For example, if you have a 15 yr old who went joy riding and got roped into driving a getaway car, but was otherwise a clean kid, a few nites in Juvie and a year probation will probably do it. Take the same 15 yr old who already had bad raps, obviously hasn't learned his lesson so in that case, incarceration would do it. Regardless of the age of the person, I believe that probation and/or incarceration decisions would be based on individual basis/circumstances.

Probation one time and if they mess that up, no more probation for any offense ever. There is nothing wrong with jailing people and keeping them there if they habitually are going to commit crimes against people. Probation is way overrated and should be earned and must be completed successful. Further offenses even after serving a probation does not merit more probation. Jail needs to be hard work and difficult and then criminals would not see it as a time out they would see it as harder than having a job.

Neither....Both don't address the problem of why the crime was committed...I would like to see a combination of Punishment (incarceration or probation) with Training (GED, Learning a skill or trade) with the sentence open ended until both parts are complete.

Incarceration only means that the criminal gets a free ride for all the time they are "punished" in jail. Probation only works if there are strict terms for it, and the person has threat of REAL punishment (which would mean overhauling the prison system so it IS punishment). Bottom line is prison has to return to the days when it was a punishment for what the criminal did, not a chance for a free room, free meals, free medical and dental care, free cable, free internet, a free gym, days spent lounging around instead of working, and all the other perks they get while in prison.

well it depends on the offense some people make Lil mistakes and they learn from them, but incarceration is effective when a big crime is committed its the only way to show them how bad there crime really was and give them time to think about it. teach them a lesson. probation is need too keep them in line to make sure they wont commit another crime and to give them a second chance. both are effective to me

Probation is used mainly to allieviate overcrowding at prisons and jails. The "severe" criminals can spend time behind bars while the less "severe" criminal is given a chance to prove that he/she can obey rules and stay out of trouble.
This question has attracted answers from those who favor locking up people and throwing away the key because they have weapons and will not hesitate to kill a person in cold blood to defend lives and property. Those who advocate for the death penalty feel the same way except that the death penalty takes 25 years to carry out. Murderers who are not on death row are usually paroled after 25 years anyway. What is the point?
Locking people up generates jobs in America. Maybe illegal immigrants can become correctional officers and take the jobs at prisons and jails that no one else wants. What has happened to personal responsibility?

Incarceration is because you have less freedom as where if you are on probation than you at least have the freedom of being in your own home. etc.
