I'd have been headed to my doctor long before three weeks. Hiccups may not be serious, but I would think they'd compromise everything in life, such as eating, drinking, talking, swallowing -- even sleeping.

Hiccups are caused by a contraction of the diaphragm muscle located above the stomach. Most simple cases of hiccups can be cured by holding the breath, gulping water without taking a breath, breathing into a paper bag (the carbon dioxide usually cures hiccups. Plus there are hundreds of layman's "cures". But any case of hiccups lasting for three weeks straight requires medical intervention. Go see your doctor, for heaven's sake!

How did the hiccups present? Has it been progressively getting worse? Does he have a change in his voice? Any problems swallowing food or drinking? Does he/did he smoke? Anything makes this better or worse? You should bring your dad to your GP/Family practice doctor.

I would definitely go to the doctor if it had been THAT long.... Plus, I probably wouldn't let it go on that long before doing something!!!! I would probably call the doc if I had them for three DAYS straight!
Oh yeah, AND call Guinness!

Someone told her to try sugar under her tongue. I was
always told to use a teaspoon of granulated sugar and
put it in the middle of the tongue and let it dissolve slowly.
The diaphram should expand.
