The immigration flow from the beginning was mostly from English speaking countries. English became the preferred second language in European and surrounding countries, especially those that were once under British rule, and many countries see the value in using the English language in commerce throughout the world.
It's funny though, considering that when this land was found and explored, it was mapped out by people who spoke romantic languages, (French, Spanish) and there was a time when those who spoke English were a minority. Just weigh the population of tribes of Native Americans with their own languages against the population of the Colonists.
Even with the numerous Chinese immigrants that came in the mid-19th century, there weren't enough to overcome the almighty English language. But look at it this way, we aren't the ones who promoted it so well. We have to give that to the British people who proliferated the language to its high esteem.
Now, if China had kept its place as the hub of commerce, had seeked out new and uncharted territories, or had gone beyond the bounderies of Asia, we would be speaking Chinese. Or if the Mongolians had actually achieved their takeover of the Eurasian continents, we would be speaking Manderin. How 'bout that.

It has not been practical up until this point for large numbers of Americans to learn Chinese. That's changing, though, and I think we will see many more people learning it in the near future.
