I live in a small town and I am only charged $12 for a hair cut and $9 for my son(Great Clips), how much of a tip should I be giving? Is there a percentage you go by? I usually tip about 25% or more depending on how happy I am with the results. Is that okay? The turnover is high, so they help many, many clients per day and they don't do coloring or facial waxing, just cuts and styling. I would really like feedback from actual hairstylists if anyone is one. Thanks and God Bless!

It is average to give about $5 for a tip if you pay $12 for a hair cut. I am a cosmetologist and I have done hair in allot of different states from Georgia, Colorado, New Jersey and allot of other places and the average tip is $5. We aren't paid that much AND as you can tell by allot of these postings, some only would consider giving about 15 percent at the most, a few dollars. We're not making allot of money from this.

If you have a person you go to regularly it is good to tip them $5... if you especially love your cut throw in an extra dollar or two. Cuts aren't very expensive and people OFTEN have an extra $20 in their pockets. But you see allot of people going out of the haircutting business because they aren't paid enough and they rely on their tips to feed their family's, especially after taxes are taken out. So when you do find that person who gives you that amazing haircut, hold on to them and make them your hairstylist, if you haven't found one already of coarse. So go ahead and tip that $5. After all $5 extra really isn't that much!

Several people here are stating $5 and some even more. Do they even realize this is 33 1/3% of a $15 cut. That is way too high. I will go into the business if I get $5 per cut tip. These chop shops serve 10 to 20 person per day per stylist. At that rate the stylist can make $50 to $100 per day just in tips.

Now for you. A $12 haircut, tip $2 and $9 it is $1. This is about 15%. If you love your cut you can go slightly more. If you are giving too many dollars away in tips you can not afford to get regular cuts. Which is more important to you?

25% is about average, unless you're a blue hair!! Older ladies usually give about 50 cents and tell you to go buy yourself a pop!! You can't even buy a pop for that!! I've been a stylist for 10 years, and 25% is a fair amount if you don't have a regular stylist. I have regulars that tip really well, but I would never expect a new client to tip more than that. However, if you were really satisfied..we always appreciate the larger tips. But, I think your in good shape.

You really shouldn't tip more than 15%, unless it's your friend or family member & they give you a discount, you're getting a cheaper hair cut, so give them the difference cause it's better they have the money than the salon taking it then only giving them a cut of the price, but other wise, 15% is sufficient. I'm not saying be cheap, but 15% is standard, to tip anyone. Any less ... you're a cheapskate.

I usually tip 20% in the event that they do an staggering pastime. 15% for a solid pastime. 10% for a trustworthy pastime i'm happy with. in the event that they do no longer make me happy i do no longer tip. I particularly lots stick to a similar rules at a eating place different than if i'm displeased I go away 2 pennies just to coach that it wasn't an oversight.

I am not an actual cosmetologist, and i dont cut hair, but my mom has cut hair on the side for some prestigious salons most of my life. from my mom's experiences, hairdressers dont get paid alot. they get most of thier money from tips. 10 percent is what my mom used to say is a good tip. 25 if your really happy about the cut. but thats just some people.

I think a general rule is 10%, certainly no higher than 15%. I know your hairdresser appreciates the tips, and deserves a little thank you, I believe, for a job well done. You might want to consider a special tip for the holidays, but a few bucks should be sufficient otherwise.

Yeah, I live in a small town too. Guthrie, Okla. Anyway, usually $3-$5. I really have no idea how much is appropriate, if the girl is really good(and cute) usually more.
