I'm in Deerfield, Il at work and I'm wanting to drive down to St. Louis afterwards to get to Mardi Gras. Being new to the area, i'm wondering what kind of strategies I could use to avoid the rush hour I-294 south and I-55 south. I don't know if I will be able to get out of work before 3:30...but I'm curious whether the traffic will decrease by 6pm 6:30 and I can just stay late at work to sitting on the interstate.
Here's the route i'll take:

do you have a transponder or are you stopping to pay tolls,if you are stoping you would want to leave before 2:30 or after 7:00.in between you could count on an extra hour or more.you could go out to 39 and south but that will add 1.5 hours as is with out traffic.you could try running down 43 to 55 west and miss the 294 completely
good luck

Its about a 4 hour trip from st louis to southaven ms, and another 6 hour drive to new orleans from here so you should probably leave when rush hour dies down between 6-7
