Hello; I'm an Audiologist.

The carotid arteries pass very closely to the middle ear space behind the eardrum. It is not unusual to be able to hear your heartbeat when your blood pressure goes up or if there's a blockage/restriction in the carotid artery.

When your hearing gets muffled by a head cold, ear infection or ear wax build-up, the sounds from outside the body are softer, so you become more aware of the sounds inside the body.

Sometime a pulsating tinnitus can be a sign of a serious condition. Do you have significant hearing loss, spinning dizziness or any other symptoms? If so, you should get to the Ear Doctor (otologist) for a complete evaluation.

Otherwise, start with your primary Dr. for a check of your ears and blood pressure. If your hubby can hear the sound, then the Dr. can put his stethoscope to the ear and should be able to hear it too. The primary can then help you decide if a visit to a cardiologist and/or otologist is the best next step.

I have the same thing in my ear that you describe, a swooshing sound, but only in my left ear. I'm going to the doctor soon to see about it. There could be some blockage in the eustachian tube, or maybe a low-grade infection. Some people have noises in their ears, like a ringing or roaring sound, which is called "tinnitus", but I think our problem may be something else. My best advice is to see your doctor or an ENT specialist. Good luck to both of us!

I had this for months on end, and it bothered the heck out of me, because it kept me from sleeping "on my favourite side" each night in bed. (I could only sleep with my left ear down so the heartbeat sound wouldn't keep me awake). It finally went away on it's own and hasn't come back. I attributed it to a combination of stress and the hotter weather of the approaching summer.
