It depends on the state and the facility. In New Hampshire it costs $28,000 a year to house an inmate.
The funds goes to food, water, electricity, health & dental care, staff, etc. There is a lot of misconceptions of what tax-payer's money is being spent on. Most everything else is paid for by the inmates families.

Depends on the state, services provided within the prison, and the prison itself.
On average it is approximately $20,000 but I have read some places it is as high as $45,000.
I am refering to the local/county prison...the guy above me is probably correct for the federal level.

It depends on the state, and the level of security.
In california, a maximum security prisoner costs about $75,000 per year. On death row, it goes up to $100K per year.
Federal prison is about $75K per year.
I think it is really sick and corrupt.

i would guess similar to canada, one year one inmate housed in a federal insitution over 125 000 dollars considering the time used to house, move from appointment to appointment, take to court, cloth, house, feed and occassionally tear gas the range they live on when they get crazy. ching ching! I made over 100 000 dollars in 2006.

Too much. We should put them all insolitary and stop giving them things that they could have if they didn't break the law.
However, we should imprison the people that smoked pot. What a waste of taxpayer dollars. We should be imprisoning all the alcoholics......so somebody come and arrest me!!!
