lets say the bible had never mentioned this, would people still fall down speaking in tongues and what not?

do you think this is more psychological? people that go to churches that dont follow this beleif, u never see anyone fall down talking in tongues. but they can still be on fire for god. (so if it is a "god-given" ability, then does that mean all the churches are wrong that dont promote this behavior?)

so why is it only people who are introduced to this event, ever do it?

The gifts (such as tongues) were given to specific individuals for the BODY of believers for the edification of the body as a whole.

1 Corinthians 14:26 ... one will speak in tongues, and another will interpret what is said. But everything that is done must strengthen all of you.

1 Corinthians 12:30-31 Not all have gifts of healing, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they? Not all interpret, do they? But you should be eager for the greater gifts. And now I will show you a way that is beyond comparison.

1 Corinthians 14:39-40 So, my dear brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and don't forbid speaking in tongues.
But be sure that everything is done properly and in order.

1 Corinthians 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but I do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

*I challenge you with this question: Do speaking in tongues still exist? Does God deem tongues necessary for the church today now that we have the whole of Scripture. Was it not used for prophesy because what was not yet known? Is it needed to edify the body? Why is the only letter it is in was to Corinth? Why does Paul not address it in the Pastoral epistles if it's necessary for the church?

1 Corinthians 13:8-10 Love never ends. But if there are prophecies, they will be set aside; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be set aside.
Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! But when full understanding comes, these partial things will become useless.

*Things to ponder.

P.S. ... and yes... people would still fall down and "speak in tongues" not knowing the Bible.
Other religions do this and if you research demonic possession... you'll see a strong similarity.

Some churches only focus on this--saying you are not saved if you cannot speak in tongues, which is unbiblical. In 1 Corinthians it speaks of tongues being a "gift" of the spirit- and not all have it. Many have different gifts- but yes every church should teach that some do have this gift and when they do speak in tongues the Bible is also clear that there should be an interpreter when they do this in a large group--like if one person were to do this, stand up and start speaking in tongues. Honestly, if it were not in the Bible, I would think it was kinda weird and wouldn't know what to think of a person who did it--but because I know God does give this gift- it is not weird, however some abuse it and fake it....that is why the Bible speaks of an interpreter.

>lets say the bible had never mentioned this, would people still fall down speaking in tongues and what not?

Very hard to say.

>do you think this is more psychological?

Nope

>so if it is a "god-given" ability, then does that mean all the churches are wrong that dont promote this behavior?

Not necessarily, but personally I think they're missing out on a dimension of the Holy Spirit.

>so why is it only people who are introduced to this event, ever do it?

I've read about people who had it happen before they were introduced to it or had any idea such a thing existed, so I'm not entirely sure your premise is true.

Of course if bible had never mentioned this, no one would speak in tongues; maybe the obsession that is leading some to do that! as St.Paul had mentioned "except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying."

1Cor 14:9 " So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air."

The only story in the bible have been mentioned about speak in tongues was about St. Peter;
"Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language." Act 2:6
& everyone could understood what he was talking about, otherwise it will be nonsense.

This is a very good question. here's the deal:
The tongues talked of in Scripture (Acts) was not unknown. There was a huge gathering of alot of people from different places, who all spoke different languages. It was speech that was understood clearly by every person there, and even right down to the dialect of the community where the person was from.
It was not unknown, and not jibberish.
So, take it from a Christian: if you hear somebody blabbing something you can't understand - run like hell.
I do know that there is a mumbling type of incoherent speech I've heard; it sounds like b l
b l b l - and I was told by a Pastor that what was being uttered was the prime of "baal".
Or, more clearly put - its satanic.
My further studies in the manuscripts confirm that.
I absolutely do not promote this behavior; if its not understood, its not from God. He is the author of peace, not the author of confusion -
Babel is satan's deal.

One: if they are falling down to speak in tongues, that is NOT in the Bible. The first time anyone spoke in tongues, Acts 2, they stood up. Two: Tongues is the ONLY sign that a person has been baptized in the Holy Spirit. If they tell you they have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and yet don't believe in speaking in tongues, they are practicing unsound doctrine. Three: I spoke in tongues, actually prayed, before I even knew what it was. My sister slapped me and told me it was blasphemy. Years later, as an adult, I found out what it really meant. If people have to be taught how to do it, it is false. The SPIRIT gives utterance. FOUR: Thanks for the question, Chippy! FIVE: The new testament also gives rules about speaking in tongues, even in church! You may know people who speak in tongues, they just don't advertise. I don't. I just wanted to help make my point. I don't need anyone to know.

You can have people on fire for God, & they do not have the Holy Ghost, I do not believe in speaking in tongues as the evidence of having the Holy Ghost, Speaking in tongues is one of the 9 spiritual gifts, Paul said do all speak with tongues, No. I have known many people that speaks in tongues & they will cuss you out 5 minutes later. The true way to see if someone really have the Holy Ghost is to give them the word test, Let's see what that spirit they claim to have leads them into, Because the bible says the Holy Ghost will lead us into all truth. Yes in my 37 yrs. as a Christian, I have gave messages in tongues & even interpretate other people tongues, & also have even given some prophecy. But if I do not line up with God's word, Then all of this is in vain. How can the spirit of God deny his own word.

I was a 'disbeliever' in tongues... thought it was a little outdated and confusing.. I had even 'heard' it and knew it was not of God because of the way it was being used...

until God humbled me by giving it to me for prayer... it came out when I was denying it existed...

our church does not 'promote' using tongues in gatherings because you need to have an interpreter so that it is from God and not put on by man... if God intends for tongues to be used in gatherings.. He will provide an interpreter and a speaker at the same time...

I'm only speaking on behalf of those who denied that it was possible and God showed them that with Him, all things are. Do i use it anywhere except in private times with God? no... because it wasnt something He gave to me for show or boasting... i don't even tell most people that He gifted me that way because most people do not understand.

It wasnt even 'introduced' to me except in a false way.... so, God can change your perspective when you least expect it!

I don't think most people understand the purpose behind speaking in tongues. In most circumstances, it is not supposed to be someone just speaking random gibberish. It is, in fact, a way of preaching the Gospel, specifically between two people that do not share a common language.

There is absolutely no purpose to standing up and spewing forth gibberish that no one understands.

Pentecost is in the bible and there has been a revisiting in these later days. You don't have to fall down and its real.
