Its the only way non-sovereign groups can make their opinion against oppressive imperialists listened to. Unfortunately, the ease of disseminating their message is only trumped by the ineffectiveness of their tactics.
Terrorists are really in a no-win situation...no one listens until they blow stuff (or themselves) up, and then no one cares about their message BECAUSE they blow stuff (or themselves) up.

They do it (kill people, commit acts of violence) for mainly two reasons:
1. Political agenda - This group or that has something to say...in order to get their message across, they resort to violence for the attention they need, so that people will listen. Groups that kidnap people or hijack airplanes for the purpose of getting members of their group out of prisons in certain countries are mainly politically motivated as well.
2. Ideological Agenda - These are people who would go to extremes to champion what they feel is right, be it say for example an environmental extremist who goes around setting fires to new cars on dealer's lots because they feel that the car is ineffiicient and burns too much gas (they do not stop to consider that the paint, coating and upholstry that's burning is very, very toxic) or the religious extremist who for example will wear a jacket loaded with many kilos of plastique to a crowded market inhabited by those of a different religion and detonates the explosive, taking as many innocent lives as they possibly can...because he was told that his God demands it.

Poloticians using religeon for their own advantage. If and entire nation believes in a single creator, then you probably have those that are willing to die for their creator. When a political leader says, "Our creator hates them," those who would die for their ceator will go to whatever lengths they see as neccesary in order to bring about the downfall of "them".
