Okay ... How would you engage in a conversation with a girl you've never met? Trying to talk to her while class is in session isn't smart, it's a small class and it would disturbing. What would be good ways of starting a conversation? (perferrably, before or after class) ... and yeah, she sits right next to me.

I find that the best topic for a conversation with a person you don't particularly know is somewhat neutral and about something that's happening around you. The weather, your science teacher's funny tie, her cool backpack are all great things to start off with. It doesn't have to be anything especially clever (those things usually sound cheesy anyways). Remember, don't be too fast and pushy and make sure she gives you at least some positive reaction to your advances or you'll just be annoying to her.

Make sure you speak clearly and loud enough (not too loud though!) for her to hear and understand you, even if you are shy and nervous. I've had a lot of boys come up and mumble smth which I don't understand. It always made me feel uncomfortable to ask them to repeat what they're saying a million times only to hear them ask for my number, and it made them look unconfident.

I recently read an article on this topic and really liked it. It covers a lot which you might find helpful. here's the link: http://www.sirc.org/publik/flirt.html

It's a class, so you have homework, right? Get there 10 minutes before class, then when she gets there, lean over and say something to the effect of, "hi (excuse me works too), what did you think of the homework? I'm not sure about # X, what did you get?" After going thru that, (I'm guessing you're in college?) you can ask what other classes she's taking, and then what she does when she's not in school (if you're in high school, you can ask about electives or extra-curricular activities etc).

Show interest, get her talking about what she likes. Listen to what she has to say and ask questions she can't answer "yes" or "no" to.

first is eye contact! let her know you're interested, then laugh when she does. look at her and smile, even if it seems she's not looking at you. as time goes on, start with little conversations, i.e. "hello" (that one's simple), "How was your weekend?". if she sits next to you, maybe you could pass her a note asking about her weekend (i suggest doing this after the eye contact, and a little conversation.

believe me, you will stay up all night "planning" your next days' conversation, then the next day none of it will come out. so just have a rough idea of what you will say, then say what comes naturally.

build a friendship first.

It depends if you have a problem with rejection or not. Tear of a piece of paper and write would u go out with me circle yes or no and draw a smiley face and a flower on it and act realy shy. She will think it is cute and u will get your answer.
If you like her u must make an attempt don't be scared thats how u miss out on life.

Tell you what, Marty, best thing is to fake a trip over your feet, fall smack into her, fake embarrassment, apologize your *** off and continue talking.
If you've got a little extra dough, spill something on her in the process and offer to to have her clothes cleaned....that way you can talk to her again.
