I had this done and I can assure you there is nothing to worry about.I did not have the sedation, only the throat spray, which freezes your throat. It was my choice not to have the sedation because I wanted to be aware of what was happening. It was not painful at all, just a little uncomfortable with the tube down my throat. They took a biopsy and I felt nothing with that either. When they put the tube in your throat keep swallowing as the others have said.I was fully awake throughout and it was ok when they took the tube out.

I have had two. I had heard all of the stories, but honestly, it is not that bad at all. The doctor will spray your throat, and give you a sedative. Believe me, the sedative does wonders! Then he will insert a tube into your throat. Listen carefully. Keep swallowing while he puts it in. If you do that, and don't fight it, it will be very easy. It only takes a second. It's not bad if you keep swallowing. Then, since I was sedated I don't remember much, but the doctor kept telling me what a great job I was doing. I even remember looking up at the monitor and seeing my g. i. tract, and it didn't bother me. The tube comes out before you know it's out. Just let the sedative work for you. Relax with it, and keep swallowing until the tube is in. You'll be fine. The second time I had to have it done, I wasn't worried a bit, and all went well. It's really the anticipation that makes it so awful. Try to relax, although I know you won't (grin) and trust me. It's not that bad. All the best.

If offered sedation I would advise you to take it. I have not had the experience myself yet, and perhaps you will get a better answer from someone who has.

I can only say that over the years I have chatted to hundreds of patients who have undergone the same procedure. About 90% say it was OK, and about 10% found it distressing.

If you are really worried about it I'd advise you to go for sedation, you only have to stay in for an hour after you've,e had it done and you get a cup of tea. Its not painful just uncomfortable, you'll be fine.

When I had it done I remember they sprayed my throat and may have given me an injection in the arm? The next thing I knew I woke up and it was all over with! Nothing unpleasant at all, and they gave me a picture of what it looked like! You'll be fine.

Have had 2. First with sedation, 2nd without. Would recommend without as it's over quickly and you can get on with your life. Not as bad as I expected!! Good luck!

Have sedation, I did when I had one.

You dont want to have it awake. The sedation makes you forget the whole thing which is great, and wears off pretty quickly too.

Have the sedation. It is an unpleasant experience and the sedative is the same one as used for 'date rape' the drug that causes memory loss, so that afterwards you will not remember how unpleasant the procedure is.

Take the sedation and don't worry, nothing to it.
