it is anxiety especially if they two dogs were very close. A new puppy would spark her interest and keep her mind of anxiety otherwise you could try keeping her out of the kennel because she may feel lonely. I have the same problem with my older dog onlly when we leave her out in the house by herself and leave for long periods of time..(or on vacation and and someone else comes to check on her) she will do her business all over the living room because she feels alone and has anxiety.

Exercise. Exercise your dog a lot with walks, play time, and dog parks if you can. Exercise helps anxiety a lot. Dogs do feed off of your energy. If you're sad the other dog is not there, then she'll be sad too. Dogs do grieve, but they're down times are a lot shorter than humans. If you act like nothing happened (I know its hard), then she'll react to that calm cool manner. But seriously, walks. Tired dogs act out a lot less.
EDIT- A new dog will not solve this problem! Your dog will just find more ways to act out. There is a "common sense" waiting time before getting a new dog. Make sure that there are no issues in the house and with your dog before you enter in another dog. And just scolding her for the mess doesn't work either. Your dog does not remember what she did hours ago, and she has no idea if you come home and scold her why you are talking angry and it will just confuse her.

The dog most likely is having anxiety/stress issues. She could be depressed since the other dog is not there with her any longer.
Also I'm assuming you are working an 8 hour day. If that is the case, the dog is in the crate entirely to long. The dog really shouldn't be confined like that much more then 4 hours.

wa also crate our terrier when we go out because she is too naughty to be left out! when she was a puppy she had this problem, we solved it by getting her a blanket to cover the entire bottom of the cage, it makes them appreciate that it is their bed and they don't want to sit in poop, if it doesn't cover the whole space they find other uses for the area thats not the 'bed' hope this helps

be sure to take her out for a walk before you leave for work, and after the walk don't let her eat till you come hom (it sounds cruel but she really doesn't need to beable to eat 24-7, she can wait between meals like humans), if it keeps happening take her to the vet just to be sure there's nothing wring with her

Not much you can do. This is her way of showing you that she is lonely. Dog do that to get attention. Hopefully it will pass soon. Good Luck.
