I would call it a "temporary" relationship.
Yeah, I've had plenty of "relationships" like that, and they have always gone down after this came up. It's an excuse for one of them to not commit. That person wants a relationship but without strings attached. Basically says to him/herself that it's better to be with someone mediocre than to be alone. It's basically putting the relationship on hold. You know what they say, "if you're not moving forward you're moving backward." Tell the other one to give it a little bit of time then insist that they quantify their relationship. In order for a relationship (friendship or romantic) to be healthy, realistic but clear boundaries need to be established. Without even labelling it you can't even count on unwritten rules.
Either label it or get out.

Why even title it. Their in a relationship. Leave it at that. Many mature adults have relationships where they are just casually dating or even live together and they don't call it anything. Seriously no one cares.

The one that didnt want to have a title is a jerk and the other one needs to check her/his relationship. I once was with someone that told me they didnt want a girlfriend but we were like a couple and he acted like he didnt really know me in public. Never made that mistake again.

I agree with A M. My sister was in a relationship just like that. It was not a healthy relationship at all. It's a way for guys to have their cake and eat it too.

Depending on the depth of the relationship..I mean if they are not doing anything sexual then I guess they are just friends...but if sex is involved then they are classified as "Friends with Benefits" Where they enjoy each other sexually but are not exclusive as BF>GF relationship.
