For sheer control and quality, forget compacts and look at DSLR cameras.

I'm happy with my PowerShot A630. I was looking for something that was less bulky than my film SLR, but with a good variety of features beyond point and shoot. (Those SLR's do spoil their users in terms of shooting options. The problem with both the film and digital varieties is that they do take up a fair amount of space and can get heavy really quickly.)

I can't really tell you much about the series as a whole, though. I'm just familliar with the model I use, and all I know about other models is that the A640 is just like the A630, but with two more megapixels. If you don't mind spending an extra $70 to get ten megapixels instead of eight, then get the A640. But if eight megapixels is fine, so is the A630.

If you are into serious photography, I would consider the SLRs...because the accessories and lenses you eventually buy for it will follow you even if you upgrade the SLR body. The accessories and lenses will eventually be your investment, while the body will be the 'expendable' portion, especially with Moore's Law in effect. Good quality lenses keep their value well unlike digital SLR bodies.

I complement the SLR with an SD series camera because it is compact with decent quality. It has limited creativity, but perfect when you need to grab something to take snapshots. I would never buy a point-and-shoot camera new however, but refurbished.

I've used many cameras in the Canon product line and currently use 1 series pro bodies. You sound like you would do well with an Ixus. They are great little cameras and very cool. Have fun!
