yeah
ain't u heard the Prisons r full 2 bursting?
even with the 2 new 1's being built, announced 2day it won't ease it enough.
a lesser sentence leaves more room 4 scope.
they piloted early release as a form of freeing up spaces.
& we're all fully aware of the repercussions from that.

No. I think that in general they follow the sentencing guidelines which are given to them. Obviously there will be the odd occasion when a sentence is too lenient, but there are also cases where a sentence is too harsh - often these are successfully appealled by the defendant, in the process costing us a great deal of time and money. Judges know only too well that the only lesson which the vast majority of people learn in prison is how to be a better criminal, so long prison sentences should really be reserved for people who have to be removed from society for society's protection.

You'd think so wouldn't you... Most judges are from very well brought up families with lots of money, and will very rarely, if ever, experience proper "life on the streets". They will never know what it's like to have a knife held against their throats, they won't feel what it's like to be shot, or have a loved one killed in a car crash because of a drunk driver. Maybe if more "regular" people were allowed to become judges, victims might get the justice they deserve.

Of course they do because they're all so liberal and caring towards the poor old criminal, and at the same time don't give a toss about the inocent who has just been stabbed or child just been raped or whatever. Paeodos, rapists and murderers should be exectuted!

With minor offences there is a growing unwillingness to impose long custodial sentences-partly because it has been found not to be effective in deterring crime and partly because of prison overcrowding.

The human rights of the criminal supercede the rights of the victim. Liberal group huggers made sure of it.
