Check out akc.org and it has a section on the nationally recognized breed clubs. If you find your breed, you can search by location and hopefully someone will be near to you. Sometimes obedience clubs have classes for conformation handling.

are you living in UK?when i wanted to show i bought the local dog magazine"our dogs " and" dogs world" in their you find all the local shows from beginners to championship shows make a note of where and when they are and just turn up on the day its usually free to go in.many breeders will be more than willing to tell you about the breed you want also you can see the structure of the show and if the hobby is for you.at bigger shows you can also buy umpteen things for a dog.many breeders will have pups to sell or will know someone who has some.if you want a show dog you want a show quality pup as a posed to a pet so you need to tell the breeder what you want.obviously they keep the best for them selves but there will still be some good ones on offer cos they cant keep them all, also some that are pet quality will have flaws that will go against you showing like an undershot jaw or too much white markings or what ever the particular flaw is on the dog you like.

Go to the AKC site and get a listing of Kennel/breed clubs in your state. Contact them..they will be able to put you in touch with responsible breeders and with peopel willing to mentor you. I also recommend joining one of the clubs and also going to shows. This will help you meet the right people and will help you learn the ins and outs of showing.

what i would do is go to a nearby dogshow you could find out one near you by looking on the web. then i would start looking for a breed you like then go up to breeders and ask if they have puppies for sale and where they are located

Go to a dog show. Talk to folks who are exhibiting the breed(s) you're interested. They'll be more than glad to explain about showing dogs and about their breed. They might be breeders, but if they're not, they can usually steer you towards breeders. It's hard to get dog show exhibitors to stay quiet when it comes to questions about their dogs (-:
