I have looked at quite a few articles about PKU, and I am very curious. For the last 9 years (I am 24) I have tried to avoid anything with phenylalanine in the ingredients because I began to have allergic reactions when consuming those products. My specific symptoms are, tongue/throat swelling (tongue will crack open, very sore), skin rashes during and after perspiration, have also had loss of consciousness after excercising. Have also noticed similar symptoms with red dye (food coloring). Another possible item of interest may be that it seems that I didn't have these symptoms at all until I started weight lifting at around 16 yrs old, and took all kinds of amino acids, and protein supplements. If anyone has any advice, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks,
David

PKU is tested in a baby at birth. It is the body's inability to absorb proteins which then build in the brain of the baby and cause brain damage. A PKU diet (look it up at webmd) limits the amount of protein a person eats as well as other items like diet soda.

I doubt you have PKU. You should seek the advise of a physician and have a physical that includes blood work and other tests including allergies responses.

my nine year old daughter has PKU and this is a genetic disease that is tested at birth. your throat does not swell up from eating phenylalanine what happens is that there body's do not have the emzines to break down the phenylalanine which over time will cause brain damage, ogran damage etc... sounds to me like you are having an allergic reaction to something that you are eating you should go for some allergy testing
