My wife is from the great southern city and whenever I mention this fact to Koreans here in the UK, those from Seoul seem to react in some kind of haughtiness to this. I've heard from many that to be from outside of Seoul is akin to being in the countryside, including Busan. Now I'd hardly call a city the size of Rome to be a provincial back water.

It depends on when you go. In the summer, I would recommend Busan --- especially Haeundae and Gwangalli beach areas. Shopping is great in Nampodong and there are seafood restaurants everywhere. Not to mention the prices are much lower than Seoul. When I travel up to Seoul, I take KTX. It takes about 3 hours and the cost is around 50,000 won. Edit: I don't ski, but I've had college students tell me that Gangwon-do in Seoul has the best resort. But, I can't remember the name of it. Maybe someone else will answer. Also, for a winter visit of only 5 days, I think I would just stay in Seoul so you don't waste too much time in transit. I'm cringing to say this, but Seoul really has more to offer since it's too cold for the beaches in Busan now. Have fun!
