Quark Express seems to be more widely used in the publishing industry, but I find PageMaker much more user friendly.

Yes, Quark is more widely used.
Pagemaker is so out of date, that they dont even make it anymore.
It was replaced by InDesign about 4-5 years ago.
Currently there is a big migration away from Quark to InDesign, mostly because Adobe has bundled them (InDesign, Phootshop, Illustrator) together in 1 package.
But personally, I still prefer Quark over InDesign.

Pagemaker in its day gave pre-press operators so many problems, and errors, at times it was almost un-useable. Those of us in the industry referred to it as "Page-wrecker"

If you are familiar with Pagemaker, InDesign will be somewhat familiar, but you're still in for a big learning curve.

PageMaker has been replaced by Adobe InDesign. If you think pageMaker is easy to use, try InDesign. You'll love it.

It doesn't matter what is the most popular program or what other people feel is the best, my friend. What matters is what program makes you feel the most comfortable with. Point blank.

Good luck.
