As an English speaker, is it possible to self teach myself Arabic?

It is as long as you immerse yourself in the language.

I am an American who now speaks Arabic. I tried reading books, listening to tapes, doing workbooks, but none of them worked. The best way I learned was when I moved to Tunisia and was immersed in the culture. Everyone around me spoke Arabic, which meant that if I wanted to communicate, I needed to learn what they were saying, and learn fast! It's really not that hard of a language to learn, and once you learn it, you realize how beautiful it is. I now find that there are times when English words just do not express my feelings as well as Arabic words do sometimes.

Try to watch Arabic channels on tv, go to your local Middle East Markets and try making friends with the people there - they can help you learn how to speak and pronounce words correctly.

Here are a few basic words (mainly in Tunisian dialect because that's what I speak) to help get you started:

Walla = Or
Walˁlˁa = By God
Feinel bhar = Where's the beach?
Fein baiti = Where's my room?
Asala'ama = Hello
Bisla'ama = Good-bye
Birabbee minfadlik = Please
Shukran = Thank you
Na'am (Aye)= Yes
La = No
Ashnooa ahwalik? = How are you?
Labes elhamdulillah = Fine thanks
Sismik? = What's your name?
Ismi.. = My name is...
Fein...? = Where is...?
Emta...? = When is...?
in-sha Allah = God willing
Ana = I
Inta = you (male)
Inti = you (female)
Huwwa = he
Hiyya = she
Ahna = we
Jeaan = I'm hungry
3uTsha:na = Thirsty
Shaban = I'm full
Floose = money
Gha:li = exprensive
3andikshi Sarf? = Do you have change?
Sabah El Kheir = good morning
Tis'Sabah El Kheir = good night
Ija = come
Houny = here
Kadish? = How much (cost)?
Barsha= lots
Shwaya = little
Ba:hya = Okay (good)
Kelim bil Anglais? = Do you speak English?
Ku:ka = Coke
Qahwa = Coffee
Ma = Water
Xhuza = Bread
B3i:da = Far
Qri:ba = Near
Kbi:ra = Big/large

Arabic is such a difficult language to learn. If you have enough patience and put in a lot of hard work and use the correct resources to help you - then it is possible.
What I would do is I would sign up for Arabic lessons as well as teaching myself because it's always nice to have a bit of guidance from people who are fluent in the language. I also think it's a good idea to make friends with someone that's Arabic so you can speak to them and also, if you can get Arabic channels, then that would really help too.
Hope I answered your question x
