If you are familiar with what programs are needed to be ran on startup the best thing to do is go to the Start Menu, then click Run, then type in: msconfig. From the go to the last tab that will say Startup. All the checked boxes are what starts up when Windows loads. Any programs you don't want starting up uncheck the box. Stuff like the quicktime and realplayer tray icon and other random stuff is so pointless and just bogs down your windows load time. Remember that unchecking stuff that is necessary to run is not a problem, if it is needed Windows will automatically re-add it to the startup list so don't feel uneasy about unchecking stuff. The only things i keep unchecked on mine is my anti-virus, AIM, and my processor's optimization program, everything else is off. And after you save it, you do not need to restart right away unless you want to you can just leave it until the next time you restart.
Also this is a good way to see if you have any spyware starting up with your system. If it looks like you do you might want to start Windows in Safe Mode and run your anti-spyware program. If it is active in your system your spyware removal programs won't be effective at removing it, Safe Mode is the only way to get into Windows without it loading up. Just restart your computer and press F8 just before the Windows load screen shows and select the Safe Mode option.

you can check the task manager
by pressing ctrl+alt+delete
and check for the processes created by the user not the computer....
also if you want to reduce the unnecessary programs at startup
give the command msconfig in run and modify the startup programs

You can always hit to bring up the Task Manager and view all processes running on your system. However, that wouldn't tell you if they are necessary or not. You can always stop any process from the Task Manager but it would probably be wise to save all data and close programs before doing this.

Don't install unnecessary programs. Then there won't be any running in the background, will there?
